{"id":47,"date":"2023-02-14T10:30:40","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T10:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/?p=47"},"modified":"2023-02-16T10:31:39","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T10:31:39","slug":"statue-of-tobias-rustat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Statue of Tobias Rustat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-50\" src=\"http:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tobias_Rustat-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tobias_Rustat-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tobias_Rustat-700x893.jpg 700w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tobias_Rustat-768x980.jpg 768w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tobias_Rustat.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/>When the Master of Jesus College, University of Cambridge tried to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">obtain the removal of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the statue of Tobias Rustat from the college chapel because of his links to the slave trade<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the request was<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> turned down by a Church court, which found that widespread opposition to the memorial was based on what they called &#8220;a false narrative&#8221; about the scale of the financial rewards Rustat gained from slavery, and ordered that the memorial should remain in the chapel. The judg<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ment<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> was<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> made by the deputy chancellor of the diocese of Ely, David Hodge QC, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">who<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> said the removal of the Rustat memorial would cause &#8220;considerable or notable harm to the significance of the chapel as a building of special architectural or historic interest&#8221;. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">He went on to say<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"> that Rustat only made a limited part of his wealth from slavery. His initial investment in the Royal African Company was \u00a3400, but a bonus in 1691, brought their shareholding up to \u00a31,600, nearly 5 million today. Add this to the &#8220;modest&#8221; 7% per annum dividends<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and that he<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"> was a director of the Royal African Company for which he was well paid<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">O<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">ne wonders how much it would have to be for the ecclesiastical court to see it as substantial. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The true position, Hodge said, was that Rustat&#8217;s investments in the Royal Adventurers brought him no financial returns at all, and he realised his investments in the Royal African Company only in May 1691, 20 years after he had made his gifts to the college.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">Is a crime less of a crime because the criminal did not make the expected gains? But, in any case, this is an ingenuous way of avoiding the main argument. The real problem with this memorial, as well all the other memorials and statues of those who profited, or attempted to profit, from the business of slavery, is that they glorify and honour men who were guilty of a crime against humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has condemned the decision to keep the memorial of slave trade investor Tobias Rustat in Jesus College&#8217;s chapel. He said that &#8220;Memorials to slave-traders do not belong in places of worship&#8230; Why is it so much agony to remove a memorial to slavery?&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Sonita Alleyne, Master of Jesus College, has said of the verdict: &#8220;Last spring, the Church committed to taking action. This judg<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ment demonstrates the inadequacies of the Church process for addressing issues of racial injustice and contested memorialisation. It is not fit for purpose<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-49\" src=\"http:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Statue_of_Charles_II-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Statue_of_Charles_II-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Statue_of_Charles_II-700x1053.jpg 700w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Statue_of_Charles_II-768x1155.jpg 768w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Statue_of_Charles_II.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>T<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">obias Rustat was <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">close confident and supporter of Charles II<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and James II<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which position enabled him to gain considerable bribe money for gaining access to the Kin<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">g<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">particularly arranging<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> granting<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> Knighthoods<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">which could be obtained for \u00a31095 [\u00a34,379,000], plus a bribe to the person introducing the applicant<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Rustat<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> also lent money and used his access to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">royal authority<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> to ensure prompt repayment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> This was the origin of a considerable amount of the money he went on to invest in the slave trade. Let us <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">not forget<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that his royal patrons<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, who he served so loyally,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> were the principal shareholders in the Royal African Company.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> After the so-called Glorious Revolution that deposed James II, he quickly swore allegiance to<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the new King<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> William and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Queen <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Mary in 1689 to secure his pension.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Loyalty only goes so far when money is involved.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-48\" src=\"http:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/statue-rustat-193x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/statue-rustat-193x300.png 193w, https:\/\/reparations.community-languages.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/statue-rustat.png 367w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/>Rustat<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> gave o<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ver \u00a310,000 to Leicestershire churches, St Paul&#8217;s Cathedral, Chelsea Hospital, St John&#8217;s Hospital, Bath, St John&#8217;s College<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Oxford, Cambridge University Library, and Jesus College, Cambridge<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">He<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> commissioned three royal statues from Grinling Gibbons, all in Roman costume<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">commemorating<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Charles II, at<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Royal Hospital Chelsea<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> Charles II on a horse, in Windsor Castle and James II, now in Trafalgar Square.<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Moreover, he paid for the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> memorial to himself during his life and stored it in his house for eight years until it could be erected<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in Jesus College<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> on his death<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\">4<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-indent-western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Clearly a man much concerned about his reputation amongst future generations, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">so his donations<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> to Church and University can be seen as<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> just so
